The Designers Republic

I don't know why I'm just learning about this now, but apparently Sheffield, UK based design firm The Designers Republic have shut their doors.

tDR were immensely influential in the design world. During my brief stint in the graphic world in the late 90's/early 00's, they we're the top of the heap and were the ones we looked towards for experimental cues. You could probably see traces of their aesthetic within the work or yours truly. To me they were basically a visualization or electronic music during that time and not just because they designed the covers of many of the canonical releases of that time. It was a visualization of sound and space.

A film of mine will be screening at the The Amie and Tony James Gallery, The Graduate Center of The City University of New York 365 Fifth Avenue at 35th Street. It runs from April 13-27th.

The James Gallery's "Walk-By Movies," visible and audible only from the street, presents an urban, pedestrian version of the drive-in theater. On the heavily trafficked corner of Fifth Avenue and 35th Street, a curated series of films and video programs will be projected onto the gallery wall starting at 5:00 p.m. nightly. Building on the audience of street viewers attracted to the exhibition “People ‘Weekly’,” the new series further explores the windowed, street-level location of the gallery. Conceptually, "Walk-By Movies" addresses a longstanding dilemma faced by artists and curators: museum-goers cannot be expected to sit through a film or video in its entirety. By showing works that lend themselves to delimited viewing, while embracing the distinctly urban habits of window shopping and strolling, “Walk-By Movies” provides both a novel method of exhibiting contemporary film and video and a unique public art experience.

Some works of mine are featured in the most recent issue of the Polish Arts Magazine: Notes Na Tygodni (Notes For 6 Weeks).
The images accompany an interview with Mark Fisher, author of the blog K-Punk and his relation to the concept of Hauntology.

The article starts on page 94. It's all in Polish, but you can always pull some Googlese. At the least it will be amusing and perhaps a bit skewed and ghostly.

Music in the way I've been thinking..#1

I've been really into what is deemed as "Post-Minimalist" and "Contemporary Classical" composers as of late... Something I sort of delved into back in undergrad for a bit. Now seems to be coming back in a personal resurgence. I nice breath of musical fresh air in the world of instant downloads. Something slower, conceptual and inherently linked to the past and present musical and artistic environments.
